Can you spot anything wrong with me? I may look like a freak, i may have caterpillar eye brows, and i may look like a Hollister jerk. Maybe i am? But could you ever guess i have Leukemia? Could you pick out i was dying, and i am going to die. Can you see the pain i live with, the scars, the trust i don’t have? The answer is no.

I look ordinary, I act ordinary. I work in Hollister, I go to school, I drive, I have hobbies, friends and family. But I spend weeks in hospitals, getting chemo, treatment and help. I go into relapse and i become weaker and weaker. But all of you would have probably just judged a book by its cover. Most do. I get stereotyped for a “perfect person” i have money, a nice car, i’m deputy head boy, i can play sport and i am a hard working student. No one ever looks into the inside of me. It’s wrong, and people should be more aware of what cancer effects.

I have cancer, I have had it for years and it will effect everyone. So stop just thinking everyone is perfect because they look happy. The people that look happy will always be the sad ones.

Some people don’t think boys aren’t affected by the media. well, that is wrong. they are indeed affected by it-perhaps as equally as women are.

Experts believe the number of boys affected is increasing and that many cases may not be reported, since males are reluctant to acknowledge any illness primarily associated with females.

There is more and more media pressure for men and boys to take on the look of the well-muscled athletes and actors. Males are becoming insecure about their physical appearance and self image. Sports, health, and fitness magazines focus on the importance of muscularity and the methods to obtain those perfect sports bodies. Boys tend to become obsessive with weight training and if they do not see immediate results often turn to using steroids and dietary supplements that advertise fantastic muscle gain.The average boy cannot come near meeting the impossible “standard” of the media’s male body perfection. They are not going to be young Arnold Schwarzenegger’s or have the well-muscled bodies of Bay Watch life guards. The most popular magazines carry images of women and men on the covers that represent about .03 percent of the population. Obviously, that leaves .97 percent who cannot measure up to that level of body image.

The proliferation of digital imaging techniques used by the media presents images of women that are increasingly unrealistic and unattainable and many young women remain unaware that the so-called ‘ideal body’ has been digitally retouched and air-brushed to ‘perfection’ through computer-aided manipulation.
